LMH Now Certified Chest Pain Center

Russellville, Kentucky – Logan Memorial Hospital is now accredited as a Certified Chest Pain Center by the Society of Chest Pain Centers.  To become an Accredited Chest Pain Center, Logan Memorial underwent a rigorous evaluation on its ability to assess, diagnose, and treat patients who may be experiencing a heart attack.  This means that  Logan Memorial has evidence based best processes in place to meet strict criteria aimed at:

  • Reducing the time from onset of symptoms to diagnosis and treatment
  • Treating patients more quickly during the critical window of time when the integrity of the heart muscle can be preserved
  • Monitoring patients when it is not certain that they are having a heart attack to ensure that they are not sent home too quickly or needlessly admitted to the hospital.
“People tend to wait when they think they may be having a heart attack, and that’s a mistake,” states Dr. Terry Crafton, M.D., Chest Pain Medical Director, Logan Memorial Hospital. “The average patient arrives in the emergency department more than two hours after the onset of symptoms.  What they don’t realize is that the sooner a heart attack is treated, the less damage to the heart and the better the outcome for the patient.”

Logan Memorial Hospital started the process of becoming a Certified Chest Pain Center in January 2011. “This has been a team initiative from the beginning.  Logan Memorial Hospital, Logan County EMS, Saint Thomas Heart, Logan County Dispatch have all worked together to make this possible and the community is the beneficiary,” stated  William  Haugh, CEO, Logan Memorial Hospital.  Logan Memorial Hospital has been working  with  Saint Thomas Heart in Nashville on several  initiatives to improve cardiac care for patients in Logan County.

“This is another example of how our partnership with Saint Thomas Heart has been able to greatly improve both the quality and access to Cardiology care for our community,” stated Mr. Haugh. By becoming an Accredited Chest Pain Center, Logan Memorial and all of its partners have enhanced the quality of care for cardiac patients and demonstrated a commitment to higher standards.
